Hi all! I have a question. Could a blind person work as a cashier in a grocery store? What accomidations would have to be provided in order for a blind person to be a cashier? Please reply with any information about whether a blind person could work as a cashier. thanks
I think there are talking cash registers which you could use that would work fine, but I havent looked in to them.
I have heard of blind casheers but don't know how they work.

Yes, there are talking registers, the blind vendors use them. They have money identifiers attached if I remember correctly. And from what I have heard around here blind vendors do pretty well with them, so not sure how one would do with them in a store of any kind.
It depends on how busy the flow of traffic is in the store. Yes, there are talking registers with money identifers attached, but if the bill cannot be reconized by the scanner than you will have a problem.

Yeah. I've also heard of someone who was a blind cashier. Although I've heard of talking cash registers and of course the money identifiers, I also wonder how and if a blind person could make it at a regular store. I've been thinking that that would be a pretty neat job if I could work as a cashier, but now that I think about it, it would probably be pretty hard to do that at a busy place like some Wal-Marts, HEB, Target, etc, unless you don't work at an express line. The only reason I would think that is that it would take at least a few more seconds for a blind person to listen to the cash register and money identifier to verbally respond. If it was in a store with slower-moving lines like in the Wal-Marts with those automated cashier things, I wonder if I could work in a place like that, since those automated things in my opinion are actually way slower than a human working at the lines. *smile*
I don't mean me working with those automated ones by the way, but at a regular lind with the talking cash register and money identifier. I know blind people work as venders, probably independently (y'all can correct me if I'm wrong on that), but I wonder if anyone has worked at a place like the ones I mentioned, I mean like alongside other cashiers who were working with the same items.
I know for sure that you must be able to see the things you are scanning otherwise you could be cheated ect.
Hmm.. Interesting. For sighted world being a cashier is something where u will do it during holidays or for those without much education. But for blind people being a cashier would need so much effort. And i think not many stores would want to spend so much getting a talking cash register.
That really sucks. I once considered doing that at our local grocery store or like a clothing store. But nfortunatly like someone said most places wouldn't want to spend money on equipment for us. Damn it sucks being blind sometimes...
The other thing one would have to worry abhout would be how to id a person, if they wanted to buy cigarettes or alcohol. how would you know what their ID really said?
good point
